When cooking, instructions are never enough, and at times, cooking turns into a hard to predict the game. The same goes for cooking oil which is a common ingredient for frying or tossed salads and several other dishes. Cooking oil burns are another common pang of those who love to cook.
Here are some easy solutions to assuage the pain and soothe these first degrees minor burns:
Aloe Vera is rich in vitamin A-C and several minerals like Zinc, Magnesium, Selenium, copper, etc which help in skin renewal. Applying pure Aloe gel extracted from the plant will soothe the pain and help in renewing the burnt skin.
Turmeric for burns Remedy
Turmeric is a strong antioxidant and is famous for anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic properties as it has curcumin (stabilizes inflammatory membranes). Applying turmeric paste (Turmeric powder, pure Aloe gel, 1tsp each) will help soothe the burning sensation and heal the wound.
Lavender oil is antiseptic, anti-inflammatory in nature. Lavender mixed with aloe juice/gel pacifies the pain and helps in skin restoration. Take pure Aloe gel and mix 10-15 drops of lavender oil and apply directly to the wound.
Unfiltered raw and pure (natural) honey has propolis (antibacterial) that helps in keeping wound infection at bay. Applying pure honey on the burnt area prevents any microbial infection and speeds natural healing of the burn.
Minced mint leaves with honey on the burnt area helps in cooling off the pain since mint leaves are antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-pruritic. So, while the pain will ease off, burn wounds will also heal.
Cucumber juice/slices can also be used for topical application on the burn wound as it also cools the cells and tissues, speeds healing, and helps in preventing inflammation. One should not rub the slices but grate the flesh of cucumber and apply it gently on the wound. To keep it in place, a smooth gauze can be used (ensure that is not too tight though).
Diluted vinegar wards off septic infection and should be used in the initial phase to lower any risk of infection.
Black tea has Tannic Acid that alleviates pain by reducing heat from the burn. So, one can use a cold (wet and unused) black tea bag on the wound and cover it with a smooth, lightly wrapped gauze to allow proper breathing of wounds.
Raw potato slices or just the peel (thick) is anti-irritating in nature. Applying these aids the burnt wound in healing since it lowers the chance of would developing a blister.
Cooking oil burns can be minor or major depending on the depth of the damage/wound. So, if it is just a minor or second-degree wound, then the first step should be to place the wounded area under running water (cold or normal). One should never apply toothpaste or ice on the affected area since it only hardens or dries the skin surface, triggering the chances of blistering. Avoid falling for the internet myth of egg whites for burn wounds as they don’t work. If the wound is visibly deep and excruciating, then immediate medical help is suggested.
